Spring is finally here. It’s time for cleaning out all the dust and cobwebs that you’ve been neglecting over the winter months. So open up those windows and get cleaning! After all, you’ll want to make sure your home is ready for sunnier and warmer days. Here are a few ways to update your home and clean it out.
The kitchen is one of the dirtiest rooms in the house and should be thoroughly cleaned from top to bottom. But in order to get it done in the most efficient manner, start at the right side of your stove and circle your way around the kitchen, says Woman’s Day. Why is that? Well, your stove is the dirtiest item in the kitchen, so it makes sense to end with that. This way, you won’t spread dirt and grease throughout the rest of the room.
Rather than try to clean around all the knobs, take them off and let them soak in warm soapy water for a while.
Because your sink has more bacteria in it than your toilet bowl, pay special attention to it while cleaning. After cleaning with soap and water, spritz some vinegar on it, followed by hydrogen peroxide, and let air dry. Got a stainless steel sink? Put a few drops of mineral oil on a soft cloth and buff out all the smudges.
Apply a teaspoon of lemon oil on a soft cloth to clear up your glass shower doors. You can do this a couple of times a month…no need to wait for spring. Clean tiles with a homemade mixture of baking soda and water. This is also great for grout, too, but use a firmer brush for those tougher stains. Wash shower liners in the washing machine and wash all area rugs, especially those around the base of the toilet.
To break up all that grease, oil, and hair clogging your drains, pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup white vinegar. Once you let it sit for a few minutes, pour boiling water down the drains.
Now’s the time to get the outside of the windows cleaned. If you can tilt them inwards and do them from the interior, great. If not, use a sturdy ladder outside and gather your supplies. Best time to wash windows is on a cloudy day so the hot sun doesn’t dry streaks onto your windows. For interior washing, use a bit of white vinegar and water as a cleaning solution. For outside, use warm, soapy water and a small squeegee using one long motion. Dry off with a microfiber cloth.
To get the outdoors ready for increased use, take off all cushions and wash the furniture down with warm water and a squirt of dish detergent. Rinse off with the garden hose and let air dry.
If your spring cleaning chores are a precursor to selling your home and moving into a new one, call Judd Builders to see which one of our luxury communities would appeal best to you!
Keep insects and other pests from damaging your plants. If you’ve ever had the problem of pests getting to your pots through the drainage hole of your containers and ruining your lovely plants, we’ve got the fix for you! Instead of taking pebbles or other options the insects can wiggle through, try using a piece of a window screen, an old pair of pantyhose, or a coffee filter. These options are cheap, simple, and effective in keeping bugs out from your beautiful garden, and keeping your plants safe.
Planning a move? If you have beautiful potted plants you’d like to take with you to your new home, here’s a tip for safe transporting. If you have a car it can be a gamble when transporting your flowers as to whether or not they’ll be in tact when you arrive at your destination. However, if you have a step ladder that you can fit in your trunk, say goodbye to that problem! Placing potted plants in between the rungs in the ladder provides a great way for the plants to stay in place during the trip, keeping your car soil-free, and your plants perfectly intact.
We all strain ourselves trying to pick up those heavy potted plants, so give your back a break with this easy trick. First, in the bottom of your large potted plants, fill up to about halfway, or to your own personal preference, with ordinary packing peanuts. Then place a sheet of landscape fabric on top of of the peanuts, and next just line the pot with your potting soil! This is a quick fix and will make lugging around large plants dramatically easier.
There seems to be no way around bugs invading your garden. So if your plants are being swarmed by fruit flies or gnats and you don’t want to spray pesticides on them to get them away, we have a much safer, and easier solution. All you need is some water, apple cider vinegar, and a saucer or bowl. Mix the two in the bowl or saucer, half water, half apple cider vinegar. Just place your container by your house plants, or wherever these pests hover in your garden, and when these bugs fly over to your beautiful plants, they’ll be distracted the tantalizing solution, and won’t be bothering you anymore.
With the weather being as unpredictable as it is, you may need to protect your plants on short notice from a frost. To save your plants from freezing to death, an easy and cost-effective way is to use a milk jug, two liter bottle, or anything of the sort. By cutting of the bottom and placing the containers over the top of the growing plants can act as a really helpful and quick cover when needed

Furniture is more than just a statement piece — it can be functional as well. From ottomans that second as storage to bookcases designed to divide rooms, here are some furniture pieces that also serve a purpose.
Re-Arrange the Room
Sometimes, you can achieve this effect simply by moving pieces of furniture around the room. Why not try dividing your living room into zones? From game and craft zones to conversation and TV viewing zones, you can increase the overall form and function of the room by maximizing every square inch.
In small rooms and apartments, space is understandably at a premium. Again, zones work well in these types of situation. If you have a studio apartment, make distinct areas for eating, working, relaxing and sleeping: maybe incorporate a window seat to take advantage of natural light, a curtained bed and small work space with desk and chair. Go a step further and use a window seat with an opening top where you can store folded blankets for chilly mornings. Incorporate versatile pieces in order to get two uses out of each. A desk for working can double as an eating desk. Your coffee table top can be inverted to include a hard top with recessed spots for setting drinks.
Decorative storage benches are perfect ruses to stash all your old photo albums and off-season clothes, while also providing a relaxing place to sit for you or your guests.
Got a large open concept great room that is just too big to inspire coziness? Use a backless bookcase to divide the room. Because there is no back to the bookcase, natural light streams through and still allows viewing to the other side. However, it acts as a visual divider that breaks up large chunks of space quite nicely.
In the Kitchen
Kitchen carts and rolling bistro tables make the perfect complement to any kitchen. Check out this one from Bob Vila with rich wood paneling. Not only can it provide storage for all your olive oils, small appliances, hand towels and gadgets, it can also convert to a gorgeous kitchen cart when closed up. Roll it over to the table to serve breakfast to your guests or keep it in the corner as a conversation piece when not in use.
In the Bedroom
A modern take on the trundle bed, under-bed storage drawers are the quintessential space savers. After all, what good is an empty under-bed space anyway? It collects dust, your slippers and maybe a blanket or two. Maximize space, especially in a bedroom where this is at a premium, with pull-out drawers perfect for socks, under clothing, bathing suits, and spare sheets.

Creating a home gym is simpler than most people think. It’s a common misconception that you need a whole extra room, or a spacious home to work out effectively. Below, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite home gym equipment. All items can be easily stored away when space is needed and easily set up when it’s time to work out!

While these are very useful tools in the gym, they also require some knowledge to use correctly. Find more information about different work outs and how to use kettlebells here: http://bit.ly/1c2NjXx
Now that you’ve got the tools to improve your physical health, you can think about a few gym accessories you may have overlooked. Tax season isn’t always a treat to get through, but when you get that refund deposited into your account, things change for the better! Rather than blow it on a trip or new clothing, why not build equity in your home and do a few upgrades that will add value and appeal? Now that tax season is almost over, here are a few ways to take your refund and upgrade your home.
Make the most of your tax money and put it where you’ll see the most return: the kitchen. You don’t have to make major changes in order to add value and livability to your home. Simple ones like a fresh coat of paint, cabinet facelifts and new appliances can go a long way. Bringing your home up to speed in terms of modern appeal can entail upgrading to granite countertops, installing hardwood flooring, putting in recessed and task lighting, and adding a tile backsplash.
Open shelving is popular now, so open up your space with glass-front cabinetry or even bare cupboards to store anything from plates to glasses. Not only do you get easier access to the things you use every day, but you also open up the look and feel of the room as well. Replacing your old appliances with new ones will lower your energy bills and make cooking and cleaning that much easier.
Mosaic tiles, arabesque patterns mixed with retro, and white subway tile are all the rage in bathrooms now. If you have a traditional shower/bath combo, but want to increase comfort, space and functionality, try a walk-in shower complete with floating bench and rainfall shower head.
Floating vanities are versatile because you can vary their height. They also end up looking like a cool conversation piece rather than a simple vanity, adding increased style to your modern bathroom. Three-dimensional tile in organic waves or symmetrical patterns is another popular choice these days, bringing depth to an otherwise flat wall.
To boost your entertainment while in the shower, incorporate wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices and docking stations into your mirrors, showerheads and vanities. Heated flooring and heated towel racks are also a luxurious choice to increase comfort in the cold months.
It’s not fancy or exciting, but new windows are an excellent use of that extra money. You’ll save cash on energy bills because replacement windows are extremely energy efficient, plus you’ll add some curb appeal to the exterior look of your home as well.
Is your family growing? For those bigger tax returns, add a game room, sunroom, screen porch or farmer’s porch to increase your comfort and entertainment. Looking to downsize? Turn your adult child’s bedroom into a craft room or man cave.
For those of you looking to buy a brand new luxury home, why not consider upgrading the amenities you want? Many of our communities here at Judd Builders come with standard amenities, such as gourmet kitchens or three bedrooms. There are ways to upgrade your basic choices through flooring, kitchen features, extra bedrooms and more. Let us help. Call us now!
